23/9/2026

To help build shared organisational skills across CCAN members, we've arranged this workshop for you:

Mediation Skills in Practice: Responding to Conflict with Confidence
Delivered by Smile Mediation
Wednesday 4th November
9.30am to 12.00pm (followed by lunch)

Talking Lounge Hub (Building Bridges Network)
20 Scotland Road
Nelson - BB9 7UU
There is a fee of £15 per delegate
This is a practical taster session introducing some of the skills and approaches used in mediation.  The focus is on helping people feel more confident when conflict first appears, understand what might be happening beneath the behaviour they're seeing and know how to respond without accidentally making things worse.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:
  1. Understand what happens to our ability to communicate when emotions rise during conflict.
  2. Recognise how our own reactions can influence whether a situation escalates or calms.
  3. Look beyond the behaviour we see to what concerns, needs or experiences may sit underneath.
  4. Use deliberate listening to help people feel heard and reduce tension.
  5. Ask questions that open up conversation rather than defensiveness.
  6. Practise summarising as a simple, powerful way to check understanding and lower the temperature.
  7. Recognise when a situation is beyond your role and may need mediation or specialist support.
The session is interactive, with discussion, activities and a chance to apply what you've learned to a real conflict situation.
