My holiday isn’t until September – which seemed like a good idea at the time, avoiding the August rush, although it now feels a little way off! It has, at least, given me a bit more space to reflect, and there’s certainly plenty to reflect on.

We recently published a blog about the future of local infrastructure, setting out the challenges we face as a network, and how we need to shape ourselves to be futureproof. We focus on four things: the footprint at which members work and how we influence the changing pattern of local and strategic authorities; the critical nature of strategic leadership, connecting, and advocacy; the importance of independence from the statutory sector, and what this means in the context of service delivery; and the importance of EEDI across all our work. All of that is informing our membership review, and we’ve had lots of great conversations already. ​From Show Garden to community garden Over 2,000 plants from the RHS Badminton Flower Show in South Gloucestershire have been rehomed with more than 40 local community groups and schools, helping to create new, greener spaces.

It's been our intention to work seasonally, promoting a healthy way of working together that gives space for emergence, and values time for rest and reflection as well as co-learning and delivering. 

Following a Spring and early Summer of establishing the Community Collective; taking part in listening sessions and hosting co-learning events, high summer is our time to make new connections. And so we've been getting out and about and meeting new people over the last few weeks. 

Team members delivered a lively Climate Fresk for local women at Pavillion Cafe, and this weekend we're holding another Fresk with a Quaker group where we will experiment with a circular conversation format in response to this context.

And we held the public launch of the programme at the Pendle Festival of Culture, where thousands of people were gathering to connect and have fun in Nelson.

I know I always say this, but this week is full of information you’ll want to read and refer back to. It does feel like changing times. I won’t repeat here the government’s stance on devolution, pushing decisions closer to where people are, but I do really welcome the message of hope that comes with that.


On theme of being future-focused and, importantly, hopeful, there are a couple of things to point to. At NAVCA, we have been pulling together our thinking about the future face of local infrastructure. The world is changing, not least with local government reorganisation, health reforms, and an increased focus on neighbourhoods, but also increasing competition for infrastructure support and a growing trend towards funder plus rather than investing in infrastructure more widely. The blog below pulls that together to make the case for infrastructure as an essential part of the system (not an optional extra) which needs to be supported, nurtured and funded. Discover community activities, health and wellbeing support, volunteering opportunities, local events, funding information and training opportunities happening across Rossendale this month.

There's something for everyone – from sports and family activities to community groups and support services.

​It’s a few weeks now since the local elections, which perhaps cemented the winds of change affecting our politics and reflecting wider cultural shifts we are seeing in communities across the piece.  Many of you are at the forefront of that, seeing it, working with it, supporting others to navigate changes within their communities and with elected members.  We’ve got a couple of events coming up you might want to join – around working with new councils, and with Akiko Hart, Director of Liberty giving a provocation about the shifts we are seeing and how we might respond to them as a sector.


Meanwhile those winds of change will continue to blow over the summer.  We’ll know the outcome of the byelection this week, and perhaps have a clearer idea as to the timing of any leadership contest.  We’ll know more about how the new leaders and local authorities are bedding down, and how their priorities will play through locally.  All of this reinforces the need for strong infrastructure to support resilient communities – the seat we have on the Covenant Council will help shape that and I’d love to hear your views on priorities and what you’d like to see emerge.
