Summer update from The Filo Project Welcome to our new stakeholder newsletter where we'll share key updates from our service and beyond. Our first issue features
If you'd rather not receive news from us, please let us know. We are increasing and expanding our provision across Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and East Lancashire. Last month we officially launched in Cornwall, thanks to funding from NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board. The first groups are up and running in Looe, Saltash, Torpoint, Truro, Liskeard, Bude, Callington and Launceston. If you are interested in working with us to bring The Filo Project to a new area we’d love to hear from you. Our visit to a Dutch dementia village After receiving the prestigious Cambridge Social Innovation Prize Liz visited Hogeweyk, the world's first dementia village in Amsterdam and met with their founder, Eloy Van Hal. Liz saw first-hand the complete reimagining of how people can live well in the later stage dementia. Read about Liz's trip in full on our website. Meet Richard An environmental artist based in Devon, Richard creates art and beautiful sculptures from found objects and everyday materials. Before meeting his wife he lived off-grid, eschewing all modern technology. Richard was diagnosed with dementia in 2020, losing all interest in art and, in contrast to his previous ‘unplugged’ life, started to spend all day watching TV. Richard began attending The Filo Project last year and, little by little, his love of creating art was reignited on his Filo days. He is flourishing, fuelled by Filo lunches featuring school favourites from his youth (good old rib stickers: liver and onions, dumplings, and bananas and custard), the supportive environment of a Filo group, and the expertise of his hosts. We see this day in, day out at our groups - a Filo day can make a huge difference. Earlier this month we had a letter to editor appear in The Independent, following the regulatory decision that lecanemab, the first drug to slow progression of early stage Alzheimer’s, will not be available on the NHS in England, as the benefits “are too small to justify the costs.” At The Filo Project we feel strongly that whilst disease-modifying drugs offer long-overdue hope that dementia could one day become a treatable, chronic condition, they mustn’t detract from the urgent need for investment in our social care system. We must tackle dementia as a social issue, not just a medical one. You can read our full letter on our website, and we'd love to hear what you think. The Filo Project turns 10!
This month we celebrate our 10th birthday. From starting with two groups in Devon, we now have 75 groups (and counting!) across four counties and have helped over 3000 people. Thank you for your continued support. We're proud of our team reaching this milestone and that we continue to be open to all, self-funders and those who are eligible for financial support from their Local Authority.
