East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) will announce shortly that they are moving out of Accrington Victoria Community Hospital (AVCH) due to the current, critical condition of the building. As you may know, the hospital is at the heart of Accrington and ELHT acknowledge it has made an immense contribution to the health and well-being of the local community. Large parts of the hospital are already closed. ELHT say it is dangerous in places where the roof has collapsed, that asbestos is present and that it has a heating system which is obsolete, and believe it is no longer fit for the health care services needed for patients or staff. ELHT will guarantee that four critical elements will move to nearby facilities within about a mile of AVCH, to ensure the community retains easy access to them and minimise disruption. These are:
• Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) • X-Ray • Outpatients • GP services delivered by PWE Healthcare Moves will follow plans in place, with minimal disruption to patients and their care, and in collaboration with colleagues across the local authority and system, to ensure a smooth transition of services, whilst also providing information to patients in advance. Once the programme is complete, the intention is for local people to be part of deciding what will happen next and how the hospital site can be protected and regenerated for years to come. ELHT say it is committed to ensuring any redevelopment is sensitive to the physical and historical elements of the site. Their aim is to retain the facades and character of the building and bring it back into use for local people.
