The first week of June has been Volunteers’ Week for 40 years, and it is always a time when existing volunteers are thanked and celebrated and new volunteers are sought - so that voluntary organisations can do more. This year the events were a collaboration between the BPRCVS’ Volunteering for Wellbeing & Community Hub, Rossendale Borough Council, and Rossendale Rotary. The clash of dates with the D-Day commemorations meant that many organisations could not take part in the organised events, but they will all have had their own internal celebrations. On Saturday 1st June, an event at Tesco’s Haslingden store saw the 38th Rossendale (open) Scout Group packing bags to raise money for Rossendale Hospice. The occasion was made very enjoyable with music from Water Village Band and a display by Rossendale Drum Majorettes. On the same day, Rossendale Rotary were outside Rawtenstall Market with a tombola to attract members of the public to come and find out more about Rotary. Joining Rotary were Rossendale Community First Responders, Civic Pride Rossendale, Rossendale Family Hub Network, and Rossendale Valley Energy, a not-for-profit group who help people in Rossendale to live in warmer, healthier homes without extra cost. Civic Pride had a flower recognition quiz, and the First Responders encouraged visitors to try their hand at resuscitating a dummy called ‘Little Anne’. Monday 3rd June saw an event held at St Anne’s Church, Edgeside, hosted by Revd Rod Bevan and wife Jill, who provided a very warm welcome, with a variety of refreshments and wonderful cakes. St Anne’s had several of their own volunteers in attendance, alongside volunteers from Rossendale Hospice, Healthwatch, Unitarian Church Nature Watch, the White Horse Project for 11-18 year olds and the Lancashire Association of Councils for Voluntary Service. The volunteers who attended talked about their volunteer journeys, illustrating the range of vital support that volunteers provide During the week, Beacon Dementia and Wellbeing also thanked their volunteers with tea and biscuits, while presenting certificates in recognition of the steadfast support of their longest serving volunteers. Chair of Trustees Rachel Yates Hoyles is pictured with Beacon’s Kath Petrie below, who has been providing a warm welcome to visitors for 7 years. Overall, as Kate Smith of BPRCVS said, “All organisations in attendance appeared to gain from the experience and the exchange of details has added to more recruitment support and development of volunteer opportunities in Rossendale.”
