This year This is Nelson commissioned political strategy games collective Red Plenty Games to help imagine what sustainable futures might look like in Nelson. They built on the research and community engagement undertaken by artists, academics, and local experts as part of the ‘Nelson Reimagined’ programme since 2022. The result is ‘Cooperation Nelson’ - a board game that invites players to collectively manage local resources (both existing and imagined) to secure a brighter future for the town. At this event you are invited to play the game, hear about its development, and give your feedback.

Associate artist Andy Abbott and Nelson Reimagined curator, will be sharing the latest version of his ‘Dreamwork: Pendle’ verbatim video game. Created through workshops with local young people, employers and skills-providers this game blends imagination with real-world insights to spark conversations about jobs, ambition, and the Future of Work. The resulting interactive fiction game uses speculative storytelling and local context to reflect these conversations — blending real-life input with imagined futures. You will be able to play the game and talk to the artist about how it was created.

We will be joined by local experts Sue Nike, Saj Butt, Simon Cronshaw and invited guests DJ Steve Barker and artist Hannah Whitlow to discuss the transformative role that art and culture can play in Nelson and places like it.

There will also be live music performances from ‘machine music’ maker Game_Program from Leeds, Nelson-based poet Ajaz Qureshi and Nelson-based singer-songwriter Aaron Hipgrave Lewis.

There is no need to sign up to this event,
