Does your group have a gardening site that you would like to develop that could support integration, food security and civic pride?

Lancashire county council's community insight and engagement team would like to invite any interested community groups to contact them if they meet the following criteria. One site from  each district will subsequently be invited to become one of twelve district Red Rose Roots Well-being Gardens.

  • Your site should be a new growing area or a space you hope to revive or expand and you will need to have permission from the land-owner.

  • Any food grown in the gardens should be offered to residents in the local community who are experiencing food insecurity or a lack of access to fresh fruit and vegetables.  Community food groups will be able to refer people to the gardens.  In addition, the gardens will act as a focus for resilience-based activities such as food growing courses, healthy eating classes and budgeting support. These courses can be delivered in house or by a reputable provider and some funding will be available to run a few relevant courses on each site.

  • We will need to ensure that there is a lead organisation, experienced in horticulture or your group would need to be prepared to engage with an identified community horticultural advisor willing to support the group to develop the space. This will help ensure the sites are sustainable and challenges are supported.

  • All sites will need to make a commitment to be up and running and growing food in the 2027 season. In addition, a commitment to gather any data requested as part of the evaluation schedule and be willing to lead a community consultation to gather starting points of residents.

If you feel you meet the above criteria please send us an email to initially share;
the location of your site, some information about your group and the community you support, any anticipated costs to set up and run your site, any outcomes you hope the project will achieve.
To    Amanda Spavin at [email protected]

We will then get  in touch to ask any additional questions and arrange a site visit if  your project is shortlisted.
