How to fund your next community garden project

20/1/2026

Picture
Big plans for 2026? Let's make them bloom. Our recent RHS Space to Grow Report, drawing on your feedback and experiences, found that fundraising is one of your biggest challenges. So we've put together four practical, community-tested tips to help you raise the funds you need to thrive:

  1. Start local. Your Council for Voluntary Service can help you find grants and funding opportunities you might not be aware of

  2. Ask local businesses. Many are happy to support community projects. A garden centre may donate plants, while a timber merchant could help with materials

  3. Research your funder. Before you apply, check that your project aligns with what they support

  4. Show your impact. Use photos and stories to showcase what your garden does for the community

To make it easier, we've gathered all our fundraising resources in one place. You'll find support on shaping your idea, finding funders, writing applications and more.

Community garden spotlight: Electric Daisy
In a once dilapidated supermarket earmarked for development, the Electric Daisy community garden buzzes. Both with people and pollinators. From ‘veg and vibes’ live music to toddler messy play, it's a space for everyone to connect through food, education and culture, firmly rooted in nature.

“...in some ways, what we’ve done here feels radical in terms of the breadth of partnerships. But I hope it acts as a showcase for what can be done with council and corporate involvement, and a model others may be able to use.”
Jamie Quince-Starkey, Electric Daisy

Wildlife wonder plant
This year, we're bringing nature home. Each month, our wildlife experts will be sharing a top plant we can all grow to help animals thrive. For January, it's the winter-flowering honeysuckle. Its fragrant blooms provide a one-stop-shop for early pollinators. It also produces berries that birds adore.
