Greener Together Pendle, a project running throughout the Pendle Borough by Newground Together, have received funding to transform an old tennis court at Marsden Park, Nelson, into a community space.
The Parks Department at Pendle Borough Council approached Newground Together to support the development of some disused tennis courts at the park. Nestled at the side of the bowling green, the tennis courts haven’t been used for quite some time. The aim is to create an area that members of the community can use and learn how to grow fruit and vegetables. This project is part of additional improvements to the park. Chris Mckee from the Council told us that “it is important for the local community to see the space as their own. This is an opportunity to generate interest amongst members of the community, bringing them together to take pride in this space.” The friends of Marsden Park, a volunteer group who already work within the park are already supporting the council to instill a sense of pride by maintaining flower beds. Ideally, the project will help to bring different members of the community together, bridging the gap between younger and older generations through learning new skills together. Rosemary Fenwick of Newground Together said “it is an amazing opportunity for people to come along, grow their own vegetables, spend some time outside, improving their health and wellbeing while learning new skills along the way”. This programme will also tie in with the Nelson Food Strategy, a project to bring an understanding of where our food comes from by demonstrating what we can grow locally. Comments are closed.
