We’re in the middle of a mental health crisis. Many of us are being left behind by a broken mental health system. And on top of this, mental health stigma is still a significant issue. The scale of the challenge is huge, but with political and systemic change, we can create a future where no mind is left behind.
That’s why for World Mental Health Day 2024 we’re asking people to join us. Join our call on the new UK government to make mental health a priority. Join our call Many of us are being left behind by a broken mental health system. Alongside those on waiting lists, there are many more who have felt unable to reach out for the help they need for fear of being judged or not taken seriously. And even those who have reached out for help are often told that they don’t meet the criteria for certain types of support. The scale of the challenge is huge, but with political and systemic change, we can create a future where no mind is left behind. Can you join our call today? Ministers and local MindsIt’s important that those in power understand complex issues from the viewpoint of those who experience them. That’s why it was good to see 3 government ministers visiting local Minds this summer. The Minister for Mental Health, Baroness Merron, visited Mind Tower Hamlets, Newham & Redbridge. And the Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms, and Minister for Lords, Baroness Sherlock visited Leeds Mind just one week after the election. The ministers met local service users and learnt how local Minds support people in their communities. The King’s Speech: a campaign win!In July, modernising the Mental Health Act was included as a top priority in the King’s Speech, which outlines the new UK government’s priorities for the months ahead. This is a huge win! The Mental Health Act is the law which says when you can be sectioned and given mental health treatment against your will. But it’s not fit for purpose. With your support, we’ve been calling for the reform of the Mental Health Act for many years. But the work doesn’t stop here. Once the bill is published, we’ll be reaching out to the UK government with our recommendations. In the video below, Gemma explains what needs to change in the Act Watch the video Behind the scenes This summer, we’ve also been working behind the scenes to move mental health higher up on the political agenda. We’ve written to all MPs elected in England and Wales to make sure mental health is at the top of their to do list. We shared information about mental health in their constituency, as well as the first steps the new UK government can take to make sure there’s no mind left behind. We've already seen MP's speaking out. We also made sure that mental health was highlighted in the Darzi review, the report commissioned by the new UK government into the state of the NHS in England and what needs to be done to fix it. It’s a tough read – but it’s also a chance for the government to make real change to the lives of people with mental health problems.
