<![CDATA[Community Focus]]>Fri, 28 Mar 2025 10:40:18 GMThttp://bprcvs.co.uk/activities-events--services1/community-focus
https://www.justgiving.com/page/jody-ross-1736369769414?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL

And the explanation story from my fundraising page:

Christmas Eve 2024: Picture the scene—a twinkling Christmas tree, presents neatly wrapped and ready for the big guy’s arrival. Feeling pretty smug about being so organised, I decided to celebrate with a well-deserved glass of wine.
Fast forward a few glasses (it was Christmas, don’t judge!), and tipsy me started thinking: “What challenge could I take on next year?” The Community Focus Hub I manage turns one on February 1st, so naturally, I wanted the challenge to benefit Advocacy Focus. But what to do?

Over the years, I’ve walked, skipped, and even last year knitted for charity. What on earth could top that? Well, let’s just say tipsy Jody is a very ambitious version of me. She decided, with the confidence of someone who’s just discovered karaoke, that 2025 would be the year I run a half marathon!🫠

Now, let me level with you. It’s been a solid nine years since I last ran anywhere, and I remember that day vividly. 🥴 It was my fitness test in the Royal Navy after returning from maternity leave for my youngest, Jakob. Spoiler: I barely survived a mile and a half. So yes, tipsy Jody has wild levels of confidence—way more than everyday, sensible Jody. But hey, who am I to argue with her? 🤣
And you know what? I can do this. I will do this.
But I need you to believe in me too. ❤️

Why am I so determined? Because of the incredible people we support at Advocacy Focus.
Since opening the Community Focus Hub in February 2024, our team has helped 276 people! From health and social care to housing, benefits, and employment, we’re there for everything. We help Veterans, we navigate confusing systems and paperwork, complete forms, and even liaise with landlords (yes, even the scary ones). And it doesn’t stop there—we provide a warm space, a hot drink, a listening ear, and judgment-free chats to combat isolation and loneliness.
I absolutely adore what we do as a team for the amazing community of East Lancashire. Our work genuinely makes a difference, and I want it to continue for as long as possible.

So, I’m asking for your help. Please support me in reaching my goal and motivating me to run further than I’ve ever run before. Together, we can ensure we keep supporting the wonderful people who need our support.

Thank you so much! ❤️

<![CDATA[Resolve Poverty Lancashire Anti-Poverty Awareness, Prioritisation and Activity survey]]>Fri, 21 Mar 2025 09:04:34 GMThttp://bprcvs.co.uk/activities-events--services1/resolve-poverty-lancashire-anti-poverty-awareness-prioritisation-and-activity-survey
Resolve Poverty is working alongside VCFSE colleagues across Lancashire to develop the Lancashire Anti-Poverty Network (LAPN). As part of this important initiative, they are conducting a survey to gather insights from individuals working within the VCFSE sector across the region.

This survey will contribute to ongoing discussions about how to address poverty in Lancashire.

The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete, and the data collected will be shared anonymously at the first in-person LAPN meeting later this year.

For those interested in learning more about the Lancashire Anti-Poverty Network or seeking additional support and information on anti-poverty initiatives and training, you can contact Patsy Davies, the Network Development Coordinator, at patsy@resolvepoverty.org.

Male suicide is a crisis that cannot be ignored. In the Northwest, suicide rates are the highest in the UK, with men making up around three-quarters of all suicides. The Let’s Keep Talking campaign, launched by the NHS in Lancashire and South Cumbria, aims to change the conversation around male mental health and encourage more men to seek help.
Why are so many men at risk?

Social and cultural pressures play a major role in male suicide. Many men feel compelled to live up to traditional ideas of masculinity, where emotional expression is seen as weak. Unemployment, financial stress, and feelings of failure can contribute to a sense of hopelessness.

Helen Parry, suicide prevention lead for Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), explains:
“Men are less likely to seek formal support for their mental health struggles and often wait until they reach crisis point. We need to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health and make it clear that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.”

How you can help
1. Start a conversation – Sometimes, a simple “How are you really feeling?” can make a huge difference.
2. Know the signs – Withdrawal, mood changes, and hopelessness can be indicators that someone is struggling.
3. Encourage support – Direct them to resources such as the Staying Alive app or the Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB suicide prevention webpage.
4. Challenge stigma – Speak openly about mental health to create an environment where men feel safe to seek help. If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out. Support is available, and talking can save lives.
